Carrie Underwood to Star in Movie as Youth Director
The country music singer and former American Idol winner has signed up with Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt to star in the indie drama Soul Surfer, about teen surfing champ and shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton, according to Variety. The story is based on Bethany's autobiography and is directed by Sean McNamara. It centres on the story of the surf icon, played by AnnaSophia Robb, who defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at the age of 13. Dennis and Helen play Bethany's parents, and Carrie has taken on the role of a church youth leader. Though Underwood, 26, has reportedly turned down various movie roles in the past, she fell in love with Hamilton's story after reading the Soul Surfer script. She'll now spend most of next week filming on Oahu, before hitting the road and returning to Nashville to prepare for her upcoming concert tour. "I can't wait to see her on the set," says Hamilton, who has gone on to become a top-performing pro surfer despite her injuries. |
