CARREFOUR, HAITI- As news spread throughout the world of the massive earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, Nashville-based evangelist and missionary, Brent Gambrell and his ministry partners were overwhelmed with grief. Brent, founder of Brent Gambrell Ministries, and his close friends and colleagues, Missy and Mike Wilson had only left the country a week before. Gambrell left behind his friends and partners  in three orphanages in Carrefour, Haiti- the epicenter of the 7.0 earthquake.

Mike and Missy Wilson, left behind their 21-year old daughter who decided to take a semester off from Middle Tennessee State University to volunteer with New Missions, a Haitian-based relief organization that been working in the country since 1982 and Gambrell’s ministry partner. Adding to the fear of the day’s events was the Wilsons’s recent adoption of a little girl from Carrefour named Tia. She, too, was stranded in the country awaiting her passport and ultimate arrival in Nashville to begin her new life.

Watch a video from just last week of little Tia as she sings "I have decided to follow Jesus" in Creole.
Today, it is clear that miracles have happened in Carrefour for the children of the orphanages. With some communications coming in, Katie, little Tia as well the  forty orphans, all  survived the earthquake and  are awaiting the arrival of Brent Gambrell and Mike Wilson. The five story orphanage, home to 40 children all under the age of six, as well as twelve staff members are all reported safe. The structure did sustain damage and the children are being cared for by the staff and living outside as aftershocks continue to rumble the already damaged building. Although the building was damaged, staff members were able to crawl in and secure some food, water and formula. Missy Wilson, anxiously  waiting for text messages and other communication from Haiti, told The Church Report, “as horrific as the situation is, and as difficult as it is to be away from my family, I know that God has a plan, and view it as an honor that God thinks I'm strong enough to handle the challenge for Him.

Brent Gambrell Ministries has been partnering with New Life Link to work with children in Haiti eight years ago. The ministry tends to not only the orphanages but also operates feeding stations, twenty one schools and over twenty churches while ministering to over 200 children and youth. Brent pointed the very critical nature of the work relief organizations provide to the children of Haiti noting that of the 8.2 millions people who live in Haiti, children under the age of 18 make up almost half of the population and even more staggering is the fact that 1.2 million children are under the age of 5.
